Smartgyro Marks The Beginning Of A New Evolution Of Products

Smartgyro, a global innovator in marine stabilization technology, announces the newly optimized SG40 model. Originally introduced over a decade ago as the first gyro stabilizer ever developed by Smartgyro, the SG40 represents a cornerstone in the company’s history. Drawing on years of testing, onboard experience, and technological innovation, the SG40 is now ready to enter a new phase, leading the way for a broader product evolution across the entire range.

Designed for vessels from 50 to 60 feet, the SG40 continues to reflect all the key Smartgyro advantages, from onboard maintenance to easy installation and seamless refit integration.

Change Starts from Within

The SG40 retains its name, external appearance, and installation footprint, ensuring seamless compatibility with previous installations and comparable gyros on the market, making it an ideal solution for both refits and new builds.

Beneath the familiar exterior, key systems have been re-engineered. Smartgyro has rethought the system to deliver greater torque, increased onboard serviceability, and less power consumption, all without compromising size or integration flexibility.

“We chose not to rename the SG40 because this isn’t a new product. It’s a reflection of our commitment to continuous technical evolution,” says Fabrizio Stifani, R&D Manager at Smartgyro. “This version is part of a broader engineering roadmap. We believe in applying real-world feedback and targeted innovation to keep the entire range consistently performing at its best.”

A Technical Evolution Inspired by Experience

The evolution of the SG40 is the direct result of over ten years of field experience, product development, and iterative testing across the entire Smartgyro range. From the original SG40 prototype to the introduction of the SG80 , SG60 , SG20 , and more recently the SG120 and SG150 . Each new model has contributed valuable insights into performance, reliability, and design optimization.

Among them, the SG20 marked a turning point in engineering approach, introducing a Smartgyro-designed motor integrated within the flywheel and a revised bearing configuration. These advancements — now adapted and applied to the SG40 — have enabled a more compact and robust internal structure, delivering higher torque output, reduced weight, and lower energy consumption.

The latest version of the SG40 also benefits from a streamlined mechanical layout that improves access to key components, shortens assembly time, and reduces the number of manufacturing steps. As a result, the SG40 is not only technically optimized, but also more efficient to produce, transport, and service, reinforcing Smartgyro’s long-term commitment to performance, innovation, and sustainability.

Speaking further on the development process, Fabrizio Stifani adds:

“With this optimized SG40, we applied a methodical, data-driven process that combined internal testing with feedback from real-world installations. We didn’t want to make changes just for the sake of change, every design update had to deliver tangible benefits in performance, efficiency, or serviceability. That’s what guides our development: evolve what works, improve what can be improved, and always stay grounded in what the customer and the installer actually need.” n

SG40 – Key Technical Improvements

-  Easier onboard maintenance: sensors and bearings are now even more accessible.

-  Higher performance: anti-roll torque increased by approx. +10.5% (from 19,000 Nm to 21,000 Nm).

-  Reduced weight: approx. –3.8% (from 650 kg to 625 kg).

-  Lower power consumption:

·   Operating AC power reduced by up to –12% (from 1.5–2.5 kW to 1.5–2.2 kW).

·   Spool-up AC power reduced by –12.5% (from 4 kW to 3.5 kW).

Looking Ahead

With further evolution cycles planned for other models in the range, Smartgyro reaffirms its mission to deliver gyro stabilizers that are not only high-performing and reliable, but also intelligent in design, efficient to maintain, and built to last.
