Commands of the German Rowing Association
Up to eight people in one boat, with their backs to the direction of travel and the common goal of reaching the finish as quickly as possible. Clear, successful communication is the be-all and end-all. And that's why every move that has to be made has its clear command, so that the teamwork succeeds!
Official rowing commands Here are the official rowing commands of the German Rowing Association at a glance! Rowing commands basically consist of two parts: The announcement part and the execution part:
"Crew to the boat" - "lift up!" Before that sculls and accessories have been brought to the jetty.
"Turn boat" - "water side (or similar) up!" Absolutely make sure that the outriggers do not touch the bottom.
"Get ready to board" - "get in!" All rowers have one leg on the board and the other leg on the dock ready to push off.
"Clear message!" Starting at the bow, the athletes report when they are ready to row ("1 ready!", "2 ready!", "3 ready!", ...).
"All forward" - "go!" Move to the delivery - turn blades vertically and pull through.
"Rudder" - "halt!" Announcement command is given at the front pull, execution command at the end pull, athletes take orthogonal position.
"Blades" - "down!" The blades are laid flat on the water.
"Stop" - "stop!" By metered counter-edging of the flat-lying blades, they cut slowly under water. The counter-edged blades are further edged to the vertical with stretched arms.
"All backward" - "go!" From the backward position, blade position opposite to rowing. Full use of the rolling path. Anchoring the blades while airborne.
"Turn over port" - "go!" (Starboard corresponding) From the back position, blade position port turned up 180°, starboard blade flat, full taxiway; in the outhaul, edge port blade, turn starboard blade up, pull.
"Short tack over port" - "go!" (starboard corresponding) port tack on body (blade turned up 180°), starboard tack in arm position (blade turned up), without rolling track. Opposite simultaneous water work on both sides of the board, blades vertical when airborne.
"Skulls (oars)" - "long!" "Port" - "long!" (Starboard correspondingly) Announcement in the delivery, execution after lifting out the blades. The spars are kept in the hand. "Skulls (oars)" - "forward!" Lead from the fore-and-aft position to the orthogonal position.
"Get ready to get off" - "get off!" Helmsman/woman got out before and holds the boat in the middle. The "water-side" foot is on the board. When getting out, the "water side" rudder is taken out with it.
"Port over pull!" (Starboard accordingly) The starboard rudder is not brought out as far as it will go. On the port side, pull extra hard.
"Shear up!" When freewheeling, the inside levers are pushed deep into the boat (e.g. in high waves).
"Half (without) power!" It is pulled through with little (almost no) force.
"Free away!" This command is given to cancel "over pull", "shear up", "half power", and the like.
